Swearing is most likely as old as the human race. The Bible is filled with examples of people who swore! Today, cursing and swearing fill the air all around us. Most of us think of swearing in the context of being angry, frustrated, hurt, abusive, violent, or blasphemous. Let's take a deeper look at what the Bible says about cursing and swearing. Cursing is so commonplace that it shouldn't surprise us that it seems to be built right into the emotional part of our brains.
Sometimes, we don't have time to think about saying a "bad word;" it just pops out. As a pastor I obviously had to monitor my mouth carefully. It wasn't too hard because my father taught me what he called the "preachers'" curse words. Because Boulder is the biggest DAM around. As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!
The term, "eternally condemned" is a nice, sweet translation compared to a translation of the real word Paul used. I'm not certain that I'd classify swearing and cursing as used in this context to be sins, although my mother certainly did. The problem here with swearing is that it is so highly offensive and vulgar sounding to so many people this is most likely--and often the sin. I had no idea what it meant or that it was a "bad" word.
But my mother did. I was sent to bed without my supper. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.
It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person. You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord. The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.
Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.
Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! For anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood is upon him.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord , my rock and my redeemer. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Those that use this language openly in those scenarios are seen as uncouth and shameful, dispensing language that is more appropriate in private.
This is because it sometimes is not seen as language that motivates people toward positivity. Using foul language might relieve tension or difficulties in your life for the moment, but it could be the last thing someone else wants to hear or have to explain to their child. And we all know that children love to repeat what they hear from adults! He means that those who find that cursing every day is like breathing will soon eat the fruits of their choice, and those fruits will probably be bitter and cause them lots of spiritual damage.
He could see, and wanted Timothy to be aware, that what could be seen as innocent profanity would only lead to demise for the person who dabbles in it. What it does mean is that with this knowledge of what Jesus did for us, we need to be cognizant of how we present this knowledge to ourselves, our fellow Christians, and those who need to know about Jesus.
Just like with quitting smoking or some bad habit, learn new ways to catch yourself before you unleash a curse word in your day-to-day life. Maybe you could position the infamous swear jar in the place you find you curse the most home, office, out with friends so you feel the pinch in your heart and your wallet when you swear. Whatever you do, just make the effort to lessen your use of profanity each day. We should use our words in a way that shows our love for God and honors those we are speaking about.
Words are neutral. The way you use words dictates if they become good or bad. Should Christians cuss? Well that depends. Or at least effective and ineffective. While it might be okay to do something, or say something, it might not always be wise.
What is the wisest thing for you to do? Life is not all black and white. This question will help us sort out what the wisest thing for us to do is. Some people will decide cussing will hinder their relationship with God. They should avoid it, and we should watch our language in front of them.
When the Bible is grey, choose grace. For building people up instead of tearing down. Thanks for reading this blog post!
