If you think you have a pretty good grasp of "how it was then," you might want to withold that comment until you read this book. For me, it was spot on. This book was unbelievable. I'm sure it's wonderful to read, but listening to it was magical. The voices completely jibe with how your imagine the characters really are, which makes this book so compelling I never wanted it to end. The story is gripping, the characters are wonderful, and your allegiance to, and empathy for, certain characters is so natural that finishing the book felt like I should be hugging them each goodbye.
I listen to audiobooks while I'm swimming laps with my underwater kit! This is one of the best books I have heard or read in a long time. Believe it or not, the seriousness of the story is told with laugh out loud humor. The writing is so vivid you feel like you are there and the narrators deserve an Academy Award. I read thru the reviews for both the book online and the audiobook here. It has true life villans and if you're from the South you will recognize many of the women in the book from your own experience.
It's not very often you come across a book that you HAVE to listen to every spare second. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to see more of Stockett's work in the future. Read The Help. I am not sure what all the fuss is about this book. Having spent most of my childhood summers visiting my grandparents in rural Mississippi, I was very interested in this story and it rings true, for me, of the the south in the 60's.
This story is very slow to develop, however, and it took great patience to stay with it until it ultimately became interesting at the end.
Definitely not a page turner - but a thoughtful book that helped me to think more closely about what it meant to be black - and white - in 's Mississippi. Be patient while the story is developing. The narration is above average and helped to keep it interesting as the story switched between characters. This book is a must. As often is the case, lots of things are left out of the movie. Brilliant writing.
This book and the way its narrated makes you feel like you are there. From start to finish this book had me hooked. I Laughed and Cried in equal measure. I think the Author is Mae Mobley I'm so glad we no longer live in the times this book is set in Loved this audio, when I had to stop listening I couldn't wait to get back to it. Within a few minutes I got used to the strong accents. It also took me a while to get to know all the different characters. But this book was exceptional and the performances brilliant.
I strongly recommend this book. Thank you. The narration and story are just breathtaking.. Absolutely loved the film. Absolutely adored the audio version. Let's have more of the same.
